Ever heard of the “Lipstick Theory” or “Lipstick Effect?”  Makeup industry experts cite rising lipstick sales during times of economic recession.  The theory remains technically unproven, but it makes sense.  Why?  Lipstick offers an inexpensive way to update your look, compared to higher-priced clothing.

A strong trend for spring 2013 is the bright, matte lip.  This look can be a bit scary if you aren’t adventurous.

“If you’re nervous about using bright lip colors, play with a sheer texture instead of a matte,” suggested makeup artist Shannon Van Horn, co-owner of Lasting Luxe Hair and Makeup Artistry.  “Look for finishes that appear matte, but are more hydrating—such as a satin finish,” said Van Horn.

“The bright lip is a fresh take on the classic Marilyn Monroe look,” she continued.  “Instead of the ‘Marilyn’ red lip, use a coral or bright pink.  Replace the black liquid liner with a different color.”

Your overall look should keep the focus on that bright lip.  Keep eye makeup neutral/minimal—like your everyday eye makeup. “Think of a bright lip as an accessory, and not an entire makeup change,” added Van Horn.

Van Horn and I suggest the following lip colors:

  • MAC “See Sheer”
  • MAC “Viva Glam Nikki”  (the original, pink version)
  • MAC “Ladybug”
  • Chanel “La Ravissante #32”
  • Tom Ford “True Coral”
  • Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain “Sweetheart”
  • L’Oreal Color Riche Caresse Stick Lipstick “Blushing Sequin”
  • Limecrime “Geradium”
